Roula Partheniou, Bibliography

All of her work uses the same set of methodologies: making objects out of wood and drawing the surfaces with paint. She focuses on that surface as much as I do and tries to make people realise something about ‘content’ or ‘essence’ by influencing the surface. We all change the form of the content and then keep that surface.

When we focus only on the surface—by that, I mean focusing on the surface to the extent of neglecting the object itself—gazing at them, we can rearrange objects based on these visible parts. Micah Lexier created new surfaces following this logic.
His work inspired me to explore another way of connecting surfaces structurally (one approach I intend to experiment with is making a book into an object that cannot be opened, as another way of linking surfaces together).

I want to create a poster that is hidden within other posters—one that only reveals itself when these posters are pieced together according to their patterns. Together, they form a new surface.
Practice
My practice this semester will consist of the following parts:
- Photobook
- Cover Itself 1 – All the inside pages are covers
- Cover Itself 2 – Book as a box
- Cover Itself 3 – A book cover makes something else a book
- A poster consisting of many posters
Another idea that I will work on, though it may not necessarily be included in this series, is:
Peeling off the surface of a globe and unfolding it into a flat UV map through 3D unwrapping, then print it out as a map, titled UV Map. UV Map interprets a globe as a flat surface.
